My 18 yr old 4wd 750 with 1200 hrs no longer travels in 2wd unless I step on the trac lock. Is this a very expensive fix?

You probably twisted off the pinion shaft. It requires removing the lift assembly & removing the brake drumm on the broken side. I'd estimate the shaft at around $300. ....

I'm guessing that trac lock is what I'd call a differential lock. Any of several failures on one side of a differential in addition to what Leonard mentioned (eg. a broken axle) could produce the problem. Without the DIFF lock, all power goes to the side with the least traction, which is the side that is no longer connected to the wheel. In 4wd, one front wheel is the only thing pulling the tractor. Perhaps there are other explanations but I can't think of any right off-hand.
No matter what the exact problem is, the parts costs are likely to be similar as well as the labour, which could be considerable.

John Deere gets $85 for the repair manual for the 750. I went to Repairmanual.com. They seem to have every manual except the one for the 750 compact. Too bad as they get only $24 for theirs. This seems like a labor intensive fix if it is the axle and I don't know if I can handle it at home. I don't feel like spending $85 to find out its too much of a job that may need special tools. Anyone know about another manual source for this tractor? ....

I don't think it would be a broken axle. The pinion shaft is usually what is broke. The one end of the shaft goes into the differential. The other end has the brake drum on it. The gear in the middle of the shaft drives the axle final drive gear. the brake drum can be froze on to the shaft making removal hard. ....

Rather than trying to diagnosis a specific problem, I was mostly indicating why the tractor worked as described and illustrating that, unlike a car, there are a fair number of parts between the wheel and the centre carrier on a tractor.
In general, a manual's procedures should be followed and some fairly specialized equipment and tasks may be required. For me, it would be a take it to the dealer problem. I have a factory manual and tools but I'm not set up to deal with removing and remounting things like lift covers and axle housings.
I'd sure go and get a repair manual to have in general. I'd probably just go for the JD manual myself, but there are a number of after-market manual publishers and one of them probably has a manual in stock. I guess there's also a small chance that a fairly external problem on some tractors may not require much tear-down and then a little work might fix the problem and save a trip to the dealer.

Tom and Leonard, I'd like to thank you both for much appreciated input. I am going to obtain a manual and tear the tractor down as much as I think i can handle. If I have to take it to a dealer, I will have at least saved some labor cost for the stuff they won't have to take off (like a fender or rops) Thanks again and regards ~~Lou~~ ....
